Home and family
Newport News; husband Lt. Cmdr. Ashley C. Rose, daughters ages 4 and 6; a Labrador Retriever and an English Pointer.
Your job
I provide oversight and review of a commercial real estate and real estate-related securities portfolio and manage capital transactions in the portfolio.
Education
BSBA in finance and economics from American University, Washington, D.C.
Career progression
I landed in real estate by accident with a dash of luck and good timing. After a summer job and college internship, both in real estate, post-graduation I joined the Financial Consulting Group with CB Richard Ellis in Washington, D.C. I have been with HGI for nearly 10 years.
Proudest business achievement
The completion of the purchase of a mezzanine loan from a Wall Street investment bank.
Biggest success factor
I have a strong personal support system with my family and friends who allow me the flexibility to focus on work when it is critical. In addition, strong math skills are important. I believe part of my success is due to my analytical ability to decipher between relevant facts and superfluous information, spot trends, and create a narrative with the data.
Professional activities
I have assisted annually with the review and the editing of Old Dominion University’s CREED Real Estate Market Report. I am also a member of ODU’s Economics Club of Hampton Roads.
Volunteer activities
I serve on the board of directors for the Newport News Family YMCA.
How do you balance your time?
My family is my first priority. Everything else is prioritized from there. I try to make sure time with my family is quality time and time at the office is focused on getting things done. I try not to work at home, nor to spend personal time at work.
Biggest obstacles faced
One of my largest obstacles is finding a means of fitting in my work environment. I often am the youngest person or only woman in a meeting and having the confidence to speak and ask questions can be challenging. It can make being at the office lonely.
How have you overcome challenges?
The best way to overcome my challenges is to be knowledgeable about my business and persistent.
Professional goal in five years
My professional goals include listening for the next new opportunities, maintaining the flexibility to take them on and remaining knowledgeable about the subject matter as it evolves. These are very fluids times in the marketplace.
Advice for women
My advice for women in the workforce is not to take anything personally; it is just business.
Downtime
Laundry.
What gets under your skin?
Incompetence. To hear people say “that’s not my job,” because I think we all have the shared interest to get the job done. Women wearing sandals in the office.
