What you do in your job
Overall responsibility of production and operations functions for a local community mortgage lending company.
Education
BS in business administration with a concentration in real estate finance from Old Dominion.
Career progression
I was fortunate to work for Joan Gifford, Gifford Realty. After a year in property management, I moved into mortgage banking. I managed local mortgage branches of RIHT, Bank of Boston and Barnett Bank. In 1998 I opened an independent mortgage banking operation. After briefly retiring in 2008, I accepted my current challenge.
Proudest business achievement
Surviving three banking mergers and taking the plunge into the entrepreneurial world.
Biggest success factor
Having  passion for what I do, a desire to build and grow things. I’m not afraid to take a chance. Surrounding myself with great people, having an understanding husband, supportive family and friends, and a strong inner faith.
Professional activities
Member of several industry trade organizations, serving in various leadership positions.  I was former president of Tidewater Mortgage Lenders Association and served on the state association’s board.
Volunteer activities
Old Dominion University Education Foundation Board of Trustees, secretary; YWCA of South Hampton Roads, Finance Committee; Marian Manor Board of Directors, treasurer; Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club board.
How do you balance your time?
My margins are thin. Often the personal, business and volunteer relationships overlap, which allows me to accomplish business objectives while enjoying fun times with friends and family, and also doing something worthwhile for a good cause.
Biggest obstacles
The past three years have been the most difficult in my 27-year career. Our biggest challenge is managing through unprecedented regulatory changes, some warranted, some not, and leading our companies through a crisis that our peers never experienced.
How have you overcome challenges?
By getting involved and voicing opinions and concerns. Engaging the right people, in the right strategic positions, being up to date on current events, along with a focus on continued education.
Professional goal in five years
To grow the company to its greatest potential, provide the leadership, oversight and vision to get there, and maintain a positive and secure work environment.
Advice for women
Give back, whether with time or money, and give without expectations.
What gets under your skin?
Manipulative people and those that do not understand the definition of accountability.
