What you do in your job
Manage a defense, federal and commercial contracting firm that provides change management and implementation solutions through software training, development and program management.
Career progression
I started as a software trainer and was recruited as a management consultant for a “Big Six” firm where I earned a reputation for managing IT training rollouts with compressed time lines. Literally, a company would switch off lights on Friday, and on Monday, thousands of people would have new software and systems on their desk.  Chesapeake General Hospital asked me to assist with a rollout, converting all employees to desktops, thus starting TMG 13 years ago.
Proudest business achievement
With a strong commercial presence, I thought it important to diversify our client base. TMG’s foray into the defense and federal sectors, based on performance, has made me proud.  To win contracts, we worked on bids for many months to develop and provide workable, innovative and competitively priced solutions. The hard work and tenacity has paid off.
Biggest success factor
Working with great people who have a strong work ethic and who make us an agile and nimble organization capable of responding to different market conditions and client needs.  TMG has been fortunate to partner with clients who communicate new expectations to us and who welcome our recommendations.
Professional activities
Serve on the boards of Heritage Bank and Greater Norfolk Corp. A member of Entrepreneurs’ Organization. Volunteer and community activities  Board member Virginia Opera and Schooner Virginia, member of Harborfront Garden Club and docent for the Chrysler Museum.
How do you balance your time?
After years of working long days to grow TMG, I took opportunities to travel abroad when our clients had operations overseas. Even though this has been one of TMG’s best years, one cannot ignore this economy.  I have a strong sense of stewardship for my employees – their mortgages, their families, and making sure they have a sense of stability. So I’m working harder to keep the positive momentum of the business and our people.
Biggest obstacles you have faced
Evolving the business to handle both national and international projects. One of our first major challenges was to provide the Transportation Security Administration 70 consultants in 11 days, which quickly spiked to 103 consultants in three weeks. We worked day and night to deploy trainers coast to coast.
How have you overcome some of your challenges?
My job requires making countless decisions, which translates to relying on the input of my management team to develop solutions. It is important to constantly maintain forward momentum. Even after 13 years in business, I like to remind myself that through persistence, there is much to be gained.
