Hampton Roads Bankshares Inc., the holding company for Bank of Hampton Roads and Shore Bank, made the following announcements:
Ronald A. Day was named president and COO of Bank of Hampton Roads. Day has more than 20 years' experience in consumer and commercial banking and in sales, strategy and operations. He held a variety of positions from 1993 to 2009 with RBC Bank. Most recently, Day was executive vice president - sales, strategy and development of RBC and chairman and CEO of RBC Card Bank Georgia. From 2005 to 2008, Day was COO and chief administrative officer of RBC as well as chairman and CEO of RBC Centura Card Bank of Georgia. He also served as president of RBC's Georgia banking operations for three years. From 1993 to 1998, Day was regional market manager and corporate officer for Centura Bank.
He began his career as commercial manager and corporate banking officer at NCNB National Bank and Nations Bank, predecessors to Bank of America.
Day earned a bachelor's in business administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a member of the University's Board of Visitors.
David R. Twiddy was named president for Eastern North Carolina markets for the Bank of Hampton Roads. He will continue as chairman of Gateway Insurance Services. Based in Elizabeth City, Twiddy will oversee the bank's operations in the Outer Banks, Albemarle and Wilmington markets of North Carolina. He joined Gateway Bank in 2000 and was president and COO from 2005 to 2008. Following the acquisition of Gateway Bank by Hampton Roads Bankshares in 2008, Twiddy was executive vice president and chief banking officer of the company.
Prior to joining Gateway, Twiddy was co-owner of Dowd & Twiddy, a commercial insurance company based in Edenton, N.C. He attended College of the Albemarle and the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University.
Michael W. Burns has joined Lions Bridge Financial in Newport News as a wealth planning assistant. Burns will assist with the 401(k) plan service and portfolio strategy. The Christopher Newport University graduate has a degree in economics and finance.
David W. Hadder has joined The Frieden Agency as a registered representative, offering an array of services and products for accumulation and protection of wealth.
Sean Sawyer has joined Tidewater Home Funding LLC as a mortgage consultant. Sawyer has more than 20 years of business and entrepreneurial experience. He is located at the Greenbrier office in Chesapeake.
Law
Steven Brinker has joined the law office of Philip J. Forbes IV PC in Newport News as an attorney. Brinker will focus on commercial transactions, tax planning, estate planning and real estate matters.
For the past five years, Brinker has advised U.S. and foreign entities on the tax and legal aspects of international and domestic transactions in the Washington, D.C., office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Previously, he was a member of the corporate department at Richards, Layton & Finger.
He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and law degree from Washington & Lee University. He holds a graduate degree in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.
Douglas L. Smith has been selected as president and CEO of Kaufman & Canoles Consulting Group in Norfolk, an ancillary business of the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles. Smith, a former banker, previously was KCC's vice president and has served in a number of community leadership positions, including on the Portsmouth City Council, the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission.
Academics
David Buckingham has been named vice president of student affairs and dean of enrollment services at Virginia Wesleyan College. Buckingham has led the college's division of student affairs since 1982, overseeing campus departments such as athletics, residence life and security. He will now also supervise enrollment at the college. He holds a BA in social science from Campbell College and an MA in history from Old Dominion University.
Gilbert Yochum, professor of economics at Old Dominion University, has been appointed interim dean of the College of Business and Public Administration. Yochum, who joined the university in 1975, is the director of ODU's Economic Forecasting Project. He is a member of the Governor's Advisory Board of Economists for the commonwealth of Virginia. He is author or co-author of more than 80 professional journal publications and research monographs and has been citied in in more than 130 newspaper, magazine and wire reports.
Technology
John M. Wasson COO has been named president of ICF International, which is headquartered in Fairfax. During his 23 years at ICF, Wasson has been a consultant on environment and energy issues, headed a regional office, and led the company's business development efforts. Wasson joined ICF in 1987 as an associate. In 1989, he was promoted to senior associate. In 1991, he became project manager and was named vice president in 1994. He was promoted to senior vice president in 1998 and executive vice president in 2001. He was named COO in 2003.
Media
Cox Communications made the following announcements:
Cy Prince has been appointed general sales manager for Cox Media Virginia. He will be based in Cox's Northern Virginia offices. Prince is responsible for leading, coordinating and supervising the efforts of Cox Media's advertising sales business in Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia. He joined Cox Media in 2008 as general sales manager for Hampton Roads. Before that, Prince held leadership positions at Comcast Spotlight, Fox Station Sales and Viacom/Paramount Stations Group.
Jim Zagami has been appointed the director of sales for Cox Media Virginia. He will be based in Cox's Hampton Roads offices. Zagami has more than 15 years of media sales and sales management experience in radio and cable television and more than 25 years of total sales experience. He joined Cox Media in 2006 as local sales manager for Northern Virginia and later general sales manager for Northern Virginia. Prior to joining Cox Media, Zagami was the director of sales for Clear Channel radio in Washington, D.C.
Zagami attended American University and is a member of the board of directors of Vehicles for Change where he has served since 2004. In 2007, he won the Cox Media national CAMY Award for Leadership.
Health care
Joseph Michael Oddis has been named CEO for Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth. He most recently was president at Harbour Hospital in Baltimore.
Oddis' 29-year-tenure in health care includes executive leadership in hospital systems, acute hospitals and ambulatory /outpatient systems, including Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System and Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Ashford Denman MHA has been promoted to director of clinical business operations at Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a master's degree in health administration and earned a bachelor's of health science degree at the University of Florida. In his previous role, Denman was an administrative resident with the Bon Secours Hampton Roads leadership team and completed an administrative internship at St. Francis Medical Center in Richmond.
Architecture & engineering
Ross T. Larkin LEED AP has joined DJG Inc. Architectural Group. Larkin holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from Virginia Tech. A LEED-accredited professional, Larkin is assisting with the design for Fire Station #3 for the city of Newport News and with several projects for Virginia State University.
Katie O'Neal has joined RRMM Architects as a registered architect. O'Neal, a LEED-accredited professional and graduate of Virginia Tech, has six years of experience in the architectural industry and has passed the Architect Registration Examination. For the past year, O'Neal has been a project manager in RRMM's K-12 and Special Projects Studios. Her projects at RRMM include the renovation of the Hampton III Science Building at Thomas Nelson Community College; Lifetime Eye Care Center; and the new campus residences at the Southeastern Virginia Training Center.
Defense contracting
Ralph Wade has been appointed chief strategy officer and vice president National Capital Region at Spectrum in Newport News. He has more than 13 years of defense and aerospace industry experience in managing large scale business areas, strategic planning, business development and corporate leadership, which he gained at BAE Systems and General Dynamics. Prior to that, Wade served 22 years in the Air Force where he had various assignments in the systems acquisition and the intelligence community.
Real estate
Linda Palmer, a licensed Realtor, has joined the sales team at Lawson Residential Realty Inc., the sales division of Lawson Homes. Palmer will serve as both assistant site manager at October at Fairdowns, a residential community in historic Suffolk, and as co-site manager of Belle Hall, a single-family home development. Her career began in health care in 1978 as the executive director of a local HMO. In 2004 she joined a national Fortune 500 company as project manager where she was responsible for leading medical practitioners in team building, communication and education as well as implementing new business.

Harshad Methrath has joined Madigan Pratt & Associates Inc. in Williasmburg as a graphic and web designer. Methrath will be responsible for all creative including design and execution of print and digital media efforts for the agency's luxury hotel clients. He will also oversee search engine optimization. Previously, Methrath was a web designer and senior SEO analyst at Dianin Group LLC. Methrath has worked as a freelance web designer and was graphic/interactive designer at Axiom Marketing Communications in Minneapolis. He holds a master's degree in advertising design from Savannah College of Art & Design and an MBA from the GRD Institute of Management in India.

Vaughnchette Townsel has joined Manpower as branch manager in its Virginia Beach location. Townsel has 13 years of experience in the staffing and recruitment industry.
Certifications & designations
Stephanie L. Kalantarians AIA at Guernsey Tingle Architects has passed the Architectural Registration Exam and is licensed to practice as an architect in Virginia. Since joining Guernsey Tingle in 2005, Kalantarians has worked on the renovation of the Henrico Theatre, which received a Design Excellence for Preservation Award from the American Institute of Architects Hampton Roads in 2009. She has also worked on Eaglescliffe Condominiums in Ford's Colony, which received an Award of Merit for Best Multi-Family Project from the Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate, also in 2009. She is working on a 33,000-square-foot psychiatric facility for Williamsburg Place in Williamsburg. Kalantarians holds a bachelor's in architecture degree from Virginia Tech.
Joe Gopi, the manufacturing engineering manager at Sumitomo Machinery Corp. of America, has become certified as a project management professional. Gopi is a member of the Project Management Institute. He has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from TKM College of Engineering in India. He joined Sumitomo in 2006, and has more than six years of mechanical engineering experience.

Judy Hare Winslow, director of tourism for the Smithfield and Isle of Wight Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been elected president of the Virginia Association of Convention and Visitor's Bureaus. Winslow previously served as chairman of the VACVB Professional Development Committee and on its executive board since 2007.
Tammie Mullins-Rice has joined the Obici Healthcare Foundation staff. Mullins-Rice is program officer, responsible for managing health-related projects and selected funding activities for the foundation. Prior to joining the foundation, she was the development manager of the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast where she directed fundraising activities. An employee with the Girl Scouts for 13 years, she also held the positions of membership manager, membership specialist, and development and marketing specialist. She earned a bachelor's degree from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.
Beth W. Moore CPA and senior partner in the Newport News office of Goodman & Co., has been named vice president of the Newport News Green Foundation. A graduate of Auburn University and Columbus College, Moore has more than 22 years in public and private accounting. She is a 2001 graduate of the Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, was awarded the 2003 Virginia Small Business Advocate of the Year by the Small Business Administration and has been recognized by Virginia Business magazine as a "Super CPA." Moore is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of CPAs, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Peninsula Chapter of the VSCPA.
Deneen M. Keegan, senior manager in the Virginia Beach office of Goodman & Co. LLP, has been named vice president of the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.
