Passport applicants using out-of-state driver's licenses will now be required to submit a second form of ID with their passport applications.
The new procedure, announced by the U.S. Department of State, comes as a change to the July 2009 standard, which encouraged review of secondary ID materials for out-of-state applicants, but did not require them to be submitted.
Acceptable forms of secondary ID include employment ID, student ID and voter registration cards. The IDs should provide information such as full name, date of birth, document issuance date and a recent photo.
If a credit card is used, a photocopy of the ID will not be suitable for the application.
However, the acceptance agent or passport clerk can include a notation on a photocopy of the primary ID, including the applicant's full name as it appears on the credit card, document type stating it is a credit card and the issuance date of the credit card.
The United States Postal Service, which accepts nearly two-thirds of passport applications, released a press release on the new procedure, stating it was now in effect. nib
