One of Hampton Roads' best-known philanthropists, Paul Hirschbiel began his career working with preschoolers at a child development center while earning his master's degree. But he switched careers and became involved in managing investments for some of the biggest companies in the world, including Dell, FAO Schwarz and Staples.

Now, he is a founding member of equities firm Envest Ventures. But the Virginia Beach resident never lost sight of his vision for children. He is the chairman of Smart Beginnings South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and on the board of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

In 2009, the Virginia House passed a resolution in honor of Hirschbiel, calling him "an inspirational leader and community benefactor" and praising his "passion and commitment to helping the families and children in need in Hampton Roads."
