When Lee Harkins was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkin's disease in 1977, her family and friends snuggled the 15-year-old in a blanket of emotional, financial and spiritual support.
But Lee, the daughter of a Norfolk pediatric surgeon, saw that not everyone is so fortunate. While awaiting radiation treatments, she met others who weren't just battling cancer, but also were struggling to buy groceries or find rides to the doctor.
Their stories moved her. So Lee, with support from her parents and friends, began organizing a volunteer group to help.
