Beginning Friday, September 17, the Hampton History Museum will present Cheyne Fotografer- A Warm & Vital Record of a Time and Place, a very special exhibit in honor of Hampton’s 400th Anniversary. Highlighting photography from C. Ethelbert Cheyne and son W.E. “Happy” Cheyne (dating 1894 through the 1960s), this highly anticipated retrospective will showcase works from two of Hampton’s premier recorders of citizenry and downtown scenes. In 1894, Christopher Ethelbert Cheyne, a trained portrait painter, relocated to Hampton, Virginia from Cincinnati, Ohio. It is in Hampton where he began using photography to capture the heart and character of residents. After Ethelbert’s death in 1943, W.E. “Happy’ Cheyne carried on his father’s tradition into the 1960s. The Cheynes' well-framed street scenes and captivating personal portraits help bring to life the best of Hampton’s "Crabtown” era of prosperity.
