THIS YEAR, INSIDE BUSINESS RECOGNIZES FOUR HALL OF FAME COMPANIES with a special Bronze Award for their continued commitment over the past three to four years to being a Best Place to Work Hall of Fame company. Companies within the Hall of Fame can submit information to receive recognition, starting with the Bronze Award after being in the Hall of Fame for at least three years, Silver after at least five years, Gold after seven years and Platinum after 10 years. Each of the Bronze winners provided examples of new things they have started for employees during the last year.

Armada Hoffler

The company started quarterly employee get-togethers. A recent gathering was at the Guadalajara restaurant in Town Center. Employees were treated to appetizers, drinks and entertainment provided by Armada Hoffler Development Executive Chris Odle and his band. The next quarterly event will be in September.

Cherry, Bekaert & Holland LLP

The firm has been taking employees and their families out to special events. Last year it was the Harlem Globetrotters at the Ted Constant Center at Old Dominion University. In March, they attended the Cirque Musica at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach. And in July, a bus took employees and their families to Colonial Downs in New Kent to watch horse racing.

Kaufman & Canoles

The Norfolk-based law firm awards the monthly GEM - or "Going the Extra Mile" award - for exceptional efforts and extraordinary contributions to the firm. GEM winners receive a Visa gift card in varying amounts and a framed certificate of appreciation signed by the firm chairman.

Each May, a Diamond Award winner is selected from the previous year's award winners. The Diamond Award winner is presented with a trophy and a check for $700 and their name is announced to the firm's seven offices via video link. The 2012 winner was Pam Sewell, shown with one of the firm's partners, Gus James.

Liberty Tax Service

At the end of March, the company held a "Vendor Day." This gave employees the opportunity to meet some of the corporate partners that offer employee discounts to Liberty employees. Representatives of banks, fitness clubs, bowling alleys and waterparks participated in the event.

Liberty Tax also has kicked off a "Fanatical Rewards/Million Dollar Challenge" to motivate employees and franchisees to work toward the goal of being the No. 1 tax company by 2020. Anyone can nominate a fellow employee or a franchisee for a fanatical award of $1,000 for that person's Fanatical job performance.

New inductees for 2012

EACH YEAR COMPANIES THAT HAVE SHOWN A HIGH LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT in the Best Places to Work competition are inducted into the program's Hall of Fame. They have either been the top overall company, have been in the top level of companies for at least two years or have been named a Best Place to Work for four years. The Hall of Fame creates an opportunity for other companies in the community to achieve Best Places to Work honors while allowing Hall of Fame companies to maintain their status as a Best Place to Work in Hampton Roads.
