Dozens of business, political and community leaders in Hampton Roads joined residents in communities across America to advocate for long-term transportation funding.
At the Stand Up 4 Transportation event in Newport News on April 9, the leaders said a long-term, sustainable approach to transportation funding and planning would facilitate economic growth.
"Today, we really celebrate collaboration, we celebrate community and we celebrate our commitment to the fact that transportation is an important issue for the economic prosperity of Hampton Roads," said William Harrell, president and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit. Cosentino, an international producer of quartz and other stone surfaces used in homes and businesses, is expanding its distribution center in Hampton at Copeland Industrial Park.
The expansion will add more than 32,000 square feet to the local facility and allow Cosentino to better meet a growing product demand, Hampton's economic development department said in a recent announcement.
When the facility opened in 2013 with nearly 162,000 square feet of space, the city agreed to a $25,000 grant to Cosentino in return for creating a minimum of 17 full-time jobs and making about $2.2 million in real property investments.

Robert A. Crum Jr. will serve as executive director of the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, the organizations recently announced.
Crum most recently served as executive director of the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, a position he held for more than six years. His accomplishments in the Richmond area include preparing and obtaining approval of a regional economic development strategy, formation of a regional emergency management program, and facilitating investments in the Port of Richmond.
